|
Day 1:
Saturday: arrive at our hotel in the centre of Cheltenham, a beautiful and historic town at the foot of the Cotswold hills, noted for its Regency architecture. A short country walk in the afternoon.
Day 2:
Transfer to the Churn Valley. A pretty walk through characteristic villages before descending down Leckhampton Hill back into Cheltenham for overnight.
Day 3:
Transfer to Hailes Abbey, a victim of Henry VIII's 'reforms'. Walk across country, following the old pilgrim route, to the beautiful small town of Winchcombe (ancient capital of Mercia), with its 'wool' church, and its castle at Sudeley, burial place of the last of Henry's six wives. Then across Cleeve Hill, the highest point in the Cotswolds (1086 ft/330m), to return to Cheltenham for overnight.
Day 4:
Transfer to Stanton, a perfectly preserved Cotswold village, much used as the backdrop for films and movies. Thence to Broadway, overlooked by Broadway Tower, and with its main street flanked with many fine Cotswold houses, inns and cottages; before continuing to Dover's Hill (site of the annual Cotswold Olympicks) and Chipping Campden, the most beautiful of all Cotswold towns, where we spend the first of two nights.
Day 5:
Today's walk starts from Chipping Campden and heads for the Hidcotes, where one of the finest formal gardens in the country is located. Continue through Ebrington, before returning to Campden for overnight. For those that prefer, Stratford-on-Avon is a short local bus journey from Campden.
Day 6:
Transfer to Birdlip, from where we walk through woodland at the edge of the Cotswold escarpment to Painswick, the 'Queen of the Cotswolds', with its little maze of medieval streets, its distinctive church and its wool merchants' houses. Overnight Painswick.
Day 7:
A circular walk from Painswick into the Slad Valley to Bisley and back. The unspoilt Slad Valley has strong literary associations with the writer and poet, Laurie Lee, whilst Bisley is a Cotswold village of exceptional charm. For those who prefer not to walk today, Painswick's famous Rococo Gardens make an interesting visit. Overnight Painswick.
